Danger Asbestos Warning SignThe mesothelium, a membrane covering many of the body’s internal organs, is a bilayer of cells within which is contained a lubricating fluid secreted by the cells in order to cushion the organs they surround. The mesothelium can become cancerous after exposure to asbestos by either inhalation or ingestion.

There are three main locations where this cancer can arise:

  • Pleura – pleural mesothelioma, the most common form, affects the mesothelium surrounding the lungs, also known as the chest cavity.
  • Peritoneum – peritoneal mesothelioma, the second most common form, affects the mesothelium lining the abdominal cavity.
  • Pericardium – pericardial mesothelioma, the most rare form, affects the mesothelium surrounding the heart.

Additionally, there are multiple types of histology that this cancer can take on:

  • Epithelioid – also called epithelial, this is by far the most common type of mesothelioma, and also the least severe.
  • Sarcomatoid – this is the most rare type of mesothelioma, but also the most severe.
  • Biphasic – also known as mixed-cell type, this type of mesothelioma, as the name implies contains both epithelioid cells and sarcomatoid cells. It is the second most common type and is less severe than sarcomatoid, but more severe than epithelioid.
